University Mottos

I visited the University of Leeds today. Across my visits to various universities, I’ve been taking notice of the crests and mottos. Leeds’ crest holds the Latin “et augebitur scientia”, in English, “and knowledge will be increased”.

Chester: qui docet in doctrina, translates loosely as let the teacher teach.

Manchester: cognitio, sapientia, humanitas – Knowledge, Wisdom, Humanity.

Durham: fundamenta eius super montibus sanctis – Her foundations are upon the holy hills (from Psalm 87).

Lampeter: Gair Duw Goreu Dysg (in Welsh) – The Word of God is the Best Learning/Teacher.

Birmingham: Per Ardua Ad Alta – Through efforts to high things.

Exeter: Lucem sequimur – May we follow the light.

Wherever I end up, I’ll take all of these with me…
